2018: F*ck Yes

Happy 2018!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re familiar with Shalane Flanagan’s infamous “F*CK YES” fist pump as she ran toward the finish of the 2017 NYC Marathon, the first US woman to win the race in 40 years.

I crave that feeling…wanting something so badly, working hard and achieving it. So it only makes sense to make “F*CK YES” one of my mantras for the 2018 season.

I completed my first half Ironman in 2017. My goal? Finish and make all of the time cutoffs. Done and done.

This year though, I want time goals. I want to work. I want to push myself beyond what I think I’m capable of.

And for that reason, I hired a coach. During my initial call, I told him I didn’t want to “just finish” this year. That I felt like once I knew I was going to finish Maine, I played it safe and it left me wondering: could I have done more? Don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly proud of what I did during that race, but I know I didn’t leave it all out there on the course. As an athlete, I think it’s natural to wonder “could I have done more” or “what could I have done differently.”

I’m currently training my first triathlon of the year: Eagleman 70.3 in June, my first goal race of the season (more on my second A goal Friday). Historically, it’s a tough course due to the heat and humidity, but I love that kind of weather. Also, the course is fast and flat, which is my favorite. My only concern regarding the things I can’t control is the wind, but it is what it is. I don’t have any time goals as of yet, because it’s so early in the season and I have a lot of work to do.

So that means more hours at the pool, a ton of time on my trainer sweating it out during the cold winter months and running lots of happy miles (hopefully mostly outside!). Am I excited about it? F*ck yes…which is different from the past few years as I did as much as I could to avoid the pool until I absolutely had to start and had to bribe myself to do a trainer ride. Running? Running is my favorite and has never really been an issue 🙂

Luckily, I have some great support. Of course my husband is my biggest fan and supports whatever I choose to do, though sometimes I think he thinks I’m nuts. I joined two outstanding teams this year: Crushing Iron and TBD Racing + I’m still running on the Oiselle Volée team. In just a short time I have met so many incredible athletes from beginners to those who have been in the sport for years–all bring something to the table for everyone to learn and I can’t wait follow their 2018 seasons.

Am I ready for it? F*ck yes. Let’s get to work.

What is your mantra?
